A law-educated federalist with a good financial focus, he is our best insurance against the nationalising and over-regulating left should the Opposition resurrect a Coalition and oust the Tories.
As an official figure, he would be almost unable to influence the political debate. But in the private meetings with both PM's and Leaders of the Opposition he would be a fountain of knowledge.
Considering the latest business-bashing frenzies across the border and across the pond, Johnston is the right GG for the times. He's an all-out Canadian, and that is good.

This kind of tribalism is exactly Quebec's mindset in many affairs and exactly why they are not as appreciated elsewhere as they should.
He's a great candidate. And he'll be an excellent GG.
Hillier has far greater potential as a policymaker than a policy-taker. The GG must be a constitutionally savvy person, not necessarily a General. Clarkson and Jean were not.
Hillier should be a federal or a provincial politician. He'd be an excellent minister of Defence, or an eventual Prime Minister. Putting him where he cannot voice his opinion or share publicly his expertise would be a waste of talent.
By all means pick another elitist academic.

Excellent choice in Johnston, who lives in Waterloo, ON. He has the diplomatic and analytcal skills, the reputation for sound judgment and fairness, and personal acumen to be a solid GG. L
and of course as any progressive knows mere generals know nothing of the constitution.
I have no complaints against Elizabeth, but I find myself concerned with who will be coming next and what his powers will be over the GG. Charles is a nightmare waiting to happen, and I don't know nearly enough about William's policies.

Mostly generated by confusion between a presidential role and the Governor-General.
As most Conservatives like to remind the current GG, the position is symbolic and is most of the time compelled to act according to the advice of the sitting Prime Minister.
Should, Lord help us, Ignatieff be PM and force GG Hillier to give assent to strategically disastrous laws, how would we be able to counter the onslaught of bleeding hearts with credibility?
With a constitutionalist as GG, Hillier can be drafted and let loose on the Liberal lightweights and sissies.
But then again, strategy and potential hardly matter to those who only perceive the world divided into black and white. Quebec and Canada, Reform and PC, academia vs the rest, you name it; they pick their tribe and wage war on the other.
